We need to immediately repeal undemocratic “anti-terrorism” laws like Bill C-51 that subject Canadians to surveillance, manipulation, and abuse at the hands of unaccountable security agencies that have grown beyond democratic control. We need to abolish secret detention without trial, “national security” certificates, no-fly lists, and “preventative detention”: The federal detention facility in Lindsay Ontario for example, houses dozens of migrants who have committed no crime and have been charged with nothing yet have been subjected to indefinite detention by the racist immigration policies of this government because of who they are, this must end. We need to ban racial profiling by police forces, and the racist police harassment and abuse that people of color continue to face in this country. We need real democratic civilian control over RCMP and all police forces, and ensure full accountability. And we need to abolish security agencies like CSIS and CSEC, because they are not democratic institutions and have again and again targeted political activists, dissidents, and national minorities with surveillance, infiltration, intimidation and disruption, and agencies that do these things have no place in a democratic society.

Tristan Dineen is a social activist active in campaigns for increasing the minimum wage, community-radio host, and Candidate of the Communist Party of Canada in Guelph
